Secularism

If one compares religious hate crimes across various countries where such a large population of Muslims exists with a different religion or where Islam is the dominant religion, then one will find that religious crime are much lower in India than in other countries.   It is to no small measure due to our constitution which guarantees equal rights to every religion and forbids discrimination based on religion.  In a country with so many different communities, secularism is not a cherished ideal but a necessity to maintain social harmony.  The problem is there are so many social and economic differences between Hindus and Muslims, that path for secularism is difficult for any party.  Economic development after the 1990s led to a decrease in hatred between Hindus and Muslims.  However social media is leading to increasing divisions between the two religions.
