Windows Vista
Microsoft launched Vista on January 30, 2007. It contained major changes compared to Windows XP. It contains updated graphical interface, contains new applications like
Windows photo gallery. It contains improved security features. It contains new designed windows shell. It contains new version of Direct X which vastly improves gaming experience. It also include dramatically changed application programming interface.
In a nutshell Vista is dramatically improved from Windows XP. But this
is where the catch lie. Though Microsoft dramatically improved the operating system,
the RAM requirement of OS swelled up. Where XP used to run with computers having
128 MB of RAM. Vista would be uncomfortable with even 1 GB. It needs minimum 2 GB
of RAM to operate comfortably.
So, Vista was greeted with very harsh criticism at the
time of reception. Reception of Vista was very poor. There were reports of Vista users downgrading their operating system and businesses planning to skip Vista.
But come 2009 Gartner research report predicts business adoption of Vista will beat that of XP during the same time frame. Vista has become the second most widely used operating system on the net with 34 % market
share, second only to XP. Sale of Windows Vista in 2009 has surpassed even Microsoft's expected figures. This has come due to steep fall in price of RAM and
processors.
Now Microsoft is planning to release Windows 7 in October 2009. According to Microsoft Windows, 7 will be more user centric and focus will be on
performance improvements. Test done over Beta version of Windows 7 show that it
is going to beat both XP and Vista in performance.
But here comes the biggest tech story of the year
Google is going to launch its own operating system. Google is going to launch its
own operating system google chrome. I would
elaborate on Google chrome in my next post. And in other post i am going to deal on
what challenges Microsoft faces from new launch
Vista contained updated graphical user interface, a visual style dubbed Windows Aero. It included redesigned search functionality. It included improved security features. For example the security restrictions on windows service
is more fine grained, so that services(especially those listening on network)have no
ability to interact with the part of the operating system they don't need to.
