Migration from Vista to Ubuntu 9.04

Yesterday I ditched my Windows Vista Business Operating system in favour of Ubuntu 9.04.  Vista Business comes at cost of  Rs 5000 to Rs 6000 bucks, while Ubuntu 9.04 is free. Hence there is lot of differences between use of these 2 operating system. If you are a general user who had normal requirements only major difference between 2 these operating systems is the price, performance wise these 2 systems are pretty similar. In fact there are situations in academics and programme development where use of linux will give you much better performance than windows. Linux power lies in being opensource. This implies that its structure is transparent. You can understand nitty-gritty of the system. If you have inquisitive mind and willing to learn in computers and programming area, linux is the operating system for you.
But the major challenge in world wide adoption of linux despite its low cost is network externalities effect. Almost all of the world computers are on Windows and to some extent on Apple. Any person working on linux faces lot of issues due to difference of 2 systems. If i start writing on differences of these 2 operating system it will take a lot of time. I will probably make another post where i will elaborate on similarities and differences between windows and linux. Here I will take you through steps that were involved in my migration to Ubunutu:
  1. I got my cd of Ubuntu from Ubuntu website which is free of cost. Then i installed it on my computer. I did not face any issues during installation.
  2. I had to got through following steps to get my internet configured
    Configuring the ethernet

    1 modified /etc/network/interface file as

    auto eth0
    iface eth0 inet static
    address 192.168.5.122
    netmask 255.255.255.0
    gateway 192.168.5.1

    And then give the command
    sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart

2 To handle domain name server .I modified /etc/resolv.conf as

    nameserver 192.168.10.40

3 I modified the system proxy and applied it system wide

4 To get the upgrade manager to start working I modified network setting synaptic package manager. It does not take system wide settings

5 When i restarted my computer my internet was not working. It was saying error of device not managed.  So I googled it and found the
resolution. I had to change /etc/NetworkManager/nm-system-settings.conf file. I changed managed=false to true and rebooted and it worked.

  3. I then configured connecting to dataserver. As you have to do Places-> Connect to server. Change the share type to windows share. Put the
folder to be accessed in the folder namer. Leave the share field blank. Put participants as domain name p09rohitr as user name. Then click connect.
Then it asked for password. Put the password and connect you are done.

  4. I then configured my printer. Go to printer configuration configure it as samba share printer with address 192.168.1.188 printer name hostel-g domain  participants
and put user name and password in box below. Then clicked forward printer name is hp- laserjet p4515x everything else is self explanatory.
  5. I then installed MS Office 2007 on Ubuntu by following steps at this link
