Strategy

Strategy is one of the most used, misused repeated words of MBA. It is the word without which an MBA cannot do without a week. Our every course in the 3rd term of our programme started with the definition of the word.
Some define strategy as the long term planning, some define it as steps to obtain sustainable competitive advantage. Its really very confusing and muddled up. But today i was playing table tennis. I experienced some thing very close to it.
I was playing doubles. Our team won the first two games quite handsomely. But then we were spanked in the next 4 games. One player of their team was very good in spinning the ball. And i am not good in handling spinning return. So what was happening i was just lobbing the ball back. And the other player was smashing it back. I was becoming conscious of this thing and started overhitting the balls or thumping them into net. I started playing erratically. Then I become sick of losing. I analyzed what the other players were doing. I came to the conclusion that i am in very bad form. And other players were in very good form. But I am good so what should i do. I tried to think positively. I found the other players weakness. After that i played according to my plan. Though my play improved only a little bit, i stopped making unforced errors which i was making when i did not had an plan. Suddenly my opponents also started making more unforced errors. In fact even luck started favouring us, earlier all the net chord balls used to fall in our side. But in last game when we were down 12 points to 17, we won the next 9 points to take the game.
So if you have a plan or strategy for doing something even forttune favours you and you seem to make more right decisions than wrong. Main purpose of strategy is not achieving the goal but guiding the course of your actions towards the goal
