Theory of Selection
I was just wondering about problem of forming groups. I tried to compare it to recruitment and selection policy of companies and things started to unravel for me. First let me define the problem that i was thinking of how do we form a groups for a particular course or say competition like Mahindra war room. First one clarification objective of forming groups is maximizing the output of the group not minimizing the amount of input required for one individual.
The best way to form a group is of course is among your friends, who share the same interests as you. That way one member of the group can always understand the other is facing in doing work and can step up to fill up the need.
But what if you are embarking on new goal or venture and need to form a group for that. Where the work required from the group is huge but the work is rewarded only when you produce the best work.
In such a situation there are three kinds of people:
(1) People who desperately want to win the thing or achieve the objective for the group would be formed. I will call henceforth call them “A”.
(2) People who are thinking of participating but are not sure whether it fits in their scheme of things. I will call them “B”
(3) People who want the glory but don’t want to work for it. I will call them “C”
(4) People who don’t give a damn about the thing. I will call them “D”.
Since we are dealing with people, they can always move up to higher group if they are motivated by other people. Only the D group since it don’t give a damn cannot be motivated to go into higher group. Now the only 2 groups who will try to form group for the work will be A people or C people. But C people won’t want to form group with C people for no one will work their small effort will even go waste. A will be willing to form group with A or B people. But A does not want to form group with C. But how do A recognize whether the person is A or B or C. And how do C re
