Australia dominated the world cricket for 15 years. In that period they were almost consistently ranked nor 1 test cricket team. They were neither weaklings in one day cricket. They have won 3 consecutive world cups in that period. And barring 1999 world cup when they had to reach the finals, in 2003 and 2007 world cup they completely eliminated the opposition. Even the 1999 world cup final against Pakistan was a completely one sided affair.

Australian team used to come back from the most dire of the situations. If one player failed to perform then there was always a player to salvage the situation. There were some truly great player in the team like mcgrath and warne. Even if one new player came in the team, he always used to perform well. There seemed to be unending supply of bench players.

Then suddenly many of key players of Australian cricket retired in their prime. And with that bench strength has also dried up. And the players who used to perform like champions like Ricky Ponting and Michael Hussey are struggling to find form.

And now Australian cricket has sunk to its lowest moment in its past 24 years. For the first time an Australian cricket team has lost the urn on its home soil. And Ricky Ponting has become the first captain to lose the ashes 3 times.

But if you look at the Australian team, good players are still there. But the team is still not performing to its potential. It seems as if it shows the importance of self belief. If the self belief is not there than it is very difficult for individual players to perform. More experienced players feel more pressure on their shoulders while new players feel less confident about their chances. And in international games where matches are very competitive, the current Australian team has lost more than a fair share of their close games.

With World Cup so close and Australian team in shambles more and more team are confident of their chances. But Australian team the winner of the past 3 world cups cannot be discounted so easily
