Naxal problem

Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime

This is a very well known proverb but Indian government does not seems to know it. India spends 14 per cent of its GDP on giving subsidies. Yet 40 per cent of India's geographical region is in grips of Naxal problem. According to India intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing, 20000 armed naxal cadre's are operating in the country besides 50000 regular cadres. And they are concentrated in area known as Red Corridor where they control 92000 square kilometers.

And if you look at the area shown in map which depicts red corridor. These are the areas that suffer from greatest illiteracy and poverty. So seriously something is wrong government is spending so much money to help the poor. Still the same people are up in arms trying to throw the same government. It is simply because the policies that government adopts cannot change a person life. Take for example Mahatama Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), it guarantees hundred days of wage employment in a financial year to a rural household whose adult member volunteer to do manual unskilled work. This scheme is very good. In fact it was one of the drivers behind Congress wave in 2009 elections. But in the long run what this will achieve. Household's which are dependent for their livelihood on this scheme will remain dependent on this scheme. Poverty is like a vicious circle. You need something drastic to break that circle. And when the same household sees any government representative misappropriating the money of this scheme. Then he loses faith in the government. So the result the government is fighting and helping the same section of people.
