Will Kasab be ever hanged

Pratibha Patil has rejected the mercy petition of 3 convicts in Rajiv Gandhi murder case. There has been an outpouring of support towards the convicts from some section of irrational Tamil Nadu public. Every political party in Tamil Nadu is making appeal to president to pardon them. Though i have little knowledge of the case of Rajiv Gandhi assassination. I don't know what part these 3 people played in his assassination. But the fact that Supreme court of India has awarded capital punishment to them means that it has been proved beyond any reasonable doubt that they had hand in his murder and were involved significantly enough to deserve capital punishment. And it was assasination of Rajiv Gandhi, former Prime Minister of India. This makes me wonder how much people can be irrational in their demands. If it was a serial rapist and murderer whose mercy petition has been rejected, how many people would have been protesting the capital punishment. But since it was murder of a former Primer Minister of India for some reason people want these convict's sentence to be commuted. How can even congress allies like DMK can forget Sonia Gandhi is wife of Rajiv Gandhi. Do they expect Congress to appeal to President to commute their sentence. Its amazing how much political parties can fall down to garner a few votes.

But coming to issue of capital punishment. I don't support capital punishment. We are not living in stone age.  But for certain special people we must realize that keeping them alive can also be a serious burden. For example Kasab is hale and hearty in his jail. If he gets hanged, how this is going to impact life of any citizen of the country. But keeping him alive is a serious burden. Crores are spent each day for his security. Besides there is always a threat that terrorist will hold people hostage and ask him to be released. If such a thing ever happens how much shameful it would be for nation.

But there is another issue which is being raised in the debate. It is being said that it is inhuman to delay the hanging of a person for so long. Human rights activists are saying that since hanging of these convicts have been delayed for so long. So their capital punishment should be commuted to life imprisonment. But i wonder if a person has done enough to deserve death, should not be he grateful to for every day or every moment that he gets to live.

Though i don't feel i have to gain anything by hanging of these convicts. I don't support capital punishment to anyone unless his life can be threat to nation. LTTE is now dead, so there is no danger in keeping alive these convicts. But i feel when such a long and fair judicious process has been followed and death penalty has been awarded to them. Then these three people must be hanged. It is wrong to argue that since there was delay in rejection of mercy petition so their death penalty should be commuted.  In fact these three people should be grateful to Indian Judicial system for letting them live so long.

And i wonder if 20 years hence Kasab will demand his death penalty to be commuted because he committed those murders when he was a rash teenager indoctrinated by terrorists and has now reformed under cordial hospitality of Indian Government. And surely there will be some NGO who will demand his death penalty to be commuted to improve India- Pakistan relations. No- one except families of people who died in 26/11 terrorist will remember the loss suffered on that day. After all Indian people are so generous to forget assassination of their own prime minister, even when his widow is right now ruling the country. Will Indian public remember the innocent poor people killed on Mumbai railway station. If Kasab was responsible for killing people at Hotel Taj, he would had chance to be hanged.
