Indian stock market

Indian stock market is increasing continuously . But why are people investing continuously in stock markets , do not people know that Indian stock markets are at all time high.

Financial savings are being continuously generated in the economy but people do have very limited options to invest their financial savings. Earlier real estate was the main sector in which people used to invest their financial savings. Returns in real estate has been fantastic in last 20-30 years but in the past two three years growth in real estate prices have significantly decreased. This is mainly because real estate prices have reached absurd levels and crackdown on black money is acting as disincentive.

Indian economy continues to perform better than average but avenues for investment for investors have decreased. Besides real estate, people also used to invest in Gold and banks fixed deposit  but returns on gold  has been very poor in past 5-10 years  and  interest in banks fixed deposit is barely above the inflation rate. There is no sector in the economy which can absorb the financial savings being generated.

On the other hand stock market has been continuously growing for past 2 years hence there has been a significant increase in retail participation in equity mutual funds. Also the big reforms created by the government has led to increasing participation by foreign institutional investors in the economy Hence Indian stock market is increasing continuously.

Unless there is an alternative sector which provides better return for Indian investors compared to Indian stock market until then retail participation in equity market will keep on increasing. Which should hopefully drive Indian equity market higher and higher .

Stock market optimism is not without basis. Indian economy is one of the fastest growing major economy and government has introduced several major economic reforms recently like bankruptcy law, GST and real estate bill. Indian economy has potential to do  very well in a long term.

But any reversal in people's expectations regarding direction of stock market movement can lead to a big slump.

PS: This is entirety my personal opinion. This does not reflect SEBI view. And opinion is not result of any work that I do with SEBI.
