Do Self Help Books help
I graduated from IIT Madras in 2008. I was from a good branch in IIT and had decent enough grades to get shortlisted in many companies. But I was getting rejected company after company. I landed one satisfactory job in field of my interest but I lost out on many opportunities of a lifetime. In hindsight it does not matter at all.
But when joining date of my company got extended. I used to get many feeling of self doubt. In those i got my hands upon the first self book I ever read. I read the "7 habits of highly effective people" from Stephen Covey.
Reading your first self help book can feel like a revelation. Now you have a magic solution to all problems in your life. You are learning from experience of so much experienced people. Their solutions cannot be wrong. But when you try to them to apply in the real life you feel such problems never come.
So in next 2-3 years i read even more self help books. I must have read near 30 such books during next 3-4 years. From many of the books I made notes and saved them in bullet format. I used to read them again and again.
But ultimately nearly all the advice in self helf are common sense. Work hard, be focus, treat every one with respect etc etc. You have already listened it many times.
But sometimes when you have doubts, you need someone advice. In such situations, advice from such books helped. And ultimately no one is born with laser focus and iron discipline. You have to develop one step at a time.
Ultimately over a larger period they have helped me over time. I am a much changed person now than before.
Ultimately you either learn from your own mistakes or from someone else's mistake.
