Political Leadership

I wonder if role of political leadership is not to guide and uplift us. But to nudge people to  look other way or do useless peaceful protests ,  while the powerful people keep looting and denying basic rights to population. 

Mahatma Gandhi had big role in uniting India against British. Indian people across British India and hundreds of princely states, considered him as their leader. And as per his command, we used to mass useless protests every decade.  At peak of second world war in 1942-43, British nearly stood defeated by the Nazis.  Instead driving British out of India, another useless non cooperation movement was organized.

If he was such a danger to British empire, then why he was released again and again from jail.
