The art of learning

I have  finished reading the art of learning by joshua waitkin.  He is national chess champion of usa and world champion in martial arts.
In his book he shares his journey of learning to win those championship. He also gives lessons on how to learn.

He gave following recommendations for improving learning for a task that you want to improve upon

  1. Full concentration when you are doing the task.
  2. Deliberate practice:  working on task with intent to improve not for  mindlessly spending time on task
  3. Breaking the task into smaller sub tasks. Learn from simplest sub tasks and proceed into more complicated tasks
  4. Analyse your performance in task. Learn from your mistakes.
  5. Mindset of learning. Try to compete against better players instead of avoiding losses. Enjoy learning.
  6. Learn winning from basics. Avoid learning cheap tricks.
  7. Learn from games of best players. One cannot learn from only his mistakes.
  8. Use visualisation skills to build confidence and strategy. Curiously this was integral part of Novak Djokovic training too. His coach was also trainer of Monica Seles
