Strange Multiverse

As marvel cinematic universe has reached its 27th film. It is running out of major characters to kill. So it has adopted the oldest trick in comic books : the concept of multiverse. Where multiple versions of the same people live in simultaneous reality.

But what if I tell you that concept of multiverse is a major scientific theory supported by the biggest scientists of our time.

Apart from comic books, the first time I read about multiverse was in the book of Stephen Hawking where he postulated multiverse as a logical possibility of our current scientific theories.

World of small particles is governed by theory of Quantum Mechanics. A fundamental feature of the theory is that it usually cannot predict with certainty what will happen, but only give probabilities.  For example, a quantum particle like an electron can be described by a wave function, which associates to each point in space a probability amplitude. This is the best the theory can do; it cannot say for certain where the electron will be found. The Schrödinger equation then relates the collection of probability amplitudes that pertain to one moment of time to the collection of probability amplitudes that pertain to another.

As per uncertainty principle of quantum mechanics when we observed a particle its wave function collapses at its location. But higher the uncertainty in its momentum.

Schrödinger used to point out to anyone who would listen, we see one outcome of an experiment — a dead cat or a live cat — not a mixture, a superposition of states. But because we only detect one outcome — one solution to the wave function — that need not mean that the alternative solutions do not exist.

As per Big Bang Theory universe was very small at time of big bang. This combined with theory of quantum mechanics leads to possibility of multiple universes.

Multiple universes were the subject of last paper of stephen hawking published a month before his death.
