Biased Media



The bias of the media is a frequent lament of people. They will complain that this channel is owned by BJP. Others will complain that some other TV channel is owned by congress. 

Bias is even more self-evident in social media. Social media like Twitter and Facebook have been criticized by Democrats and Republican parties in the USA as biased against them. 

The recommendation systems of social media networks  are designed to get maximum engagement. It does not care for neutrality. 

But is it possible for a neutral medium to exist anymore. If by strict laws social media and tv channels were made neutral . Then people will decry them as biased and chose a channel biased to their viewpoint. We want ourself want to be biased and refused to believe even facts which challenge our view points. 

Then their is question of neutrality. If there is human intervention to ensure neutrality then it cannot be neutral anymore. And an AI can be biased itself. It may learn to promote one topic more than others.

People attention spans are also decreasing. In matters not pertaining to objective truths, Truth is always nuance and detailed. 

For take example of climate change. The severe snowstorm in USA does not mean that earth is cooling instead of warming. Global warming disrupts balance of nature which causes all kinds of extreme events more probable. 

So if you want to avoid consuming biased information then you should make detailed study of topic that you want to explore. It is not necessary to do read about every trending topic of the day.

And we should read across diverse viewpoints unless we want to congratulate ourself for validating our viewpoint again and again.
