The Big Tech

For two decades Facebook and various other social media have contributed to spread of misinformation.  They are using vast amount of data to train their recommendations system better and better. It has gotten so good that millions of adults are struggling with social media addiction. The Big Tech companies are basically earning money from exploiting time from users across the world.  But they don't pay their fair share of taxes to government. 

Amazon earns so much revenue from India but claims to be in losses for so many years. Google paid 300 crore as tax to Indian government in Fy20. Taxes paid by them is disproportionately lower than impact in country. 

Problem is they are backed by us government. Any effort to tax them raises ire of usa government. 

But now what they are doing large language models is too much. 

They are basically using collective knowledge of humanity to train large language models. But it is only being used to oust low wage workers. 

Should not be model trained on collective knowledge of humanity be free for use for general public. All the profits are accruing only to private companies in America. 

Ostensibly their goal is to create artificial general intelligence. An AGI can confer lots of benefits to humanity. Discovering cure to diseases, discovering new materials etc. 

But there is conflicting opinion in scientific community. Some say it will require significant technical breakthrough to create AGI. Some say achieving AGI is just matter on training on more data. 

So in pursuit of these goals which might still never be achieved, low skilled workers should not be automated out of their livelihoods.
